For Families

What is a doula? A doula is a trained, non-clinical support person who provides emotional, physical, and educational support before, during, and after childbirth. What does a birth doula do? A birth doula provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational support during labor and birth, helping you stay comfortable, informed, and confident. What does a postpartum doula do? A postpartum doula supports families in the weeks after birth with emotional support, newborn-care guidance, feeding support, and practical help at home. When should I hire a doula? You can hire a doula as soon as you know you want one. Many families book during the second trimester, and some wait until the third. Earlier booking gives more options. How does doula support work during labor? During labor, a doula stays with you continuously, offering comfort measures, emotional support, and help communicating with your care team from early labor through birth. What happens at a prenatal visit? At a prenatal visit, your doula gets to know you, learns your preferences, helps you plan for birth, and prepares you for conversations with your care provider. Are partners included in doula support? Yes. Doulas support partners too, helping them feel confident, showing them how to help, and making sure they are cared for during labor and after. How does a doula support my birth partner? A doula supports your partner by showing them how to help, giving them breaks, and offering reassurance, so they can be present without carrying the whole load alone. Does a doula provide breastfeeding support? Doulas can support early breastfeeding with positioning, latch basics, and encouragement. For persistent challenges, they encourage connecting with a lactation professional. What does a doula do if my birth plan changes? If your birth plan changes, your doula helps you understand what is happening, process new information, and communicate with your care team, then supports the new plan. How do doulas work with hospitals and care providers? Doulas work alongside hospital staff and care providers as part of your support team, coordinating communication and comfort while respecting clinical roles and hospital policies. How do I choose a doula? Choose a doula who communicates well, supports the birth experience you want, and is available around your due date. Interviews help you find the right fit. How much do doula services cost? Doula fees vary widely by location, experience, and services included. Contact Black Pearl for current pricing for its family support services. Does insurance cover doula care? Insurance coverage for doula care varies by plan, state, and employer. Check your plan directly and ask Black Pearl about current payment options. What should I expect at the first meeting with a doula? At the first meeting, you talk about your pregnancy, your hopes for birth, how the doula works, fees, and availability. It is a two-way conversation to see if you fit. What is a birth plan? A birth plan is a written outline of what you would like to happen during labor and delivery, and a tool for communicating your preferences with your care team. It does not guarantee a particular experience or outcome.

Family Services

What family services does Black Pearl offer? Black Pearl offers culturally rooted doula support for birth, prenatal care, postpartum care, and menopause, with advocacy and healthcare navigation. How does a doula support a birth without providing medical care? A doula provides emotional and physical comfort, helps you prepare questions, supports informed communication with your care team, and helps you understand your options. Medical care stays with licensed providers. Does a doula replace my doctor or midwife? No. A doula provides non-clinical support alongside your licensed healthcare team. Your physician or midwife continues to manage your medical care. How do I book family support? Book a consultation through the contact page or call 469-471-6139. Black Pearl will share current availability and next steps. What is perimenopause and how is it different from menopause? Perimenopause is the transition leading up to menopause, when changing hormone levels affect the menstrual cycle. Menopause is the point when you have gone 12 consecutive months without a period. The transition often begins in a woman's 40s and typically lasts two to eight years. When should I see a provider for menopause symptoms? Tell your provider about menopause symptoms such as hot flashes or trouble sleeping, and see a provider to rule out other causes for missed periods or if you have not had a period for a year and start bleeding again.
