FAQ · For Families
Does insurance cover doula care?
Insurance coverage for doula care varies by plan, state, and employer. Some plans cover doula services, many do not, and coverage rules change over time. Check your plan directly, and ask Black Pearl about current payment options if your plan does not cover doula care.
Coverage varies widely
There is no universal rule for insurance coverage of doula care. Some employer plans, state programs, and Medicaid programs have added doula coverage, while many plans still do not cover it.
How to check your plan
Call the number on your insurance card and ask whether doula services are covered, what the requirements are, and whether you need a referral or pre-approval. Get the answer in writing if you can.
Ask about reimbursement
Even when coverage is not obvious, some families use flexible spending accounts, health savings accounts, or out-of-network reimbursement. Ask your plan what documentation it needs.
Payment options when insurance does not cover
If your plan does not cover doula care, ask Black Pearl about current payment options for family services. Payment plans may be available, and terms are confirmed when you inquire.
