How does advocacy fit into doula training?
Advocacy is a core part of Black Pearl doula training. Trainees learn to help clients prepare questions, support informed communication with their care team, and understand their options. Advocacy in doula work always encourages clients to discuss medical decisions with licensed healthcare professionals.
What doula advocacy looks like
A doula advocates by helping you think through what you want, write down your questions, and communicate clearly with your care team. The doula supports your voice rather than speaking over it.
Preparing for provider conversations
Training includes practice helping clients prepare for appointments: what to ask, how to share preferences, and how to understand the options a provider presents.
The boundary of advocacy
Advocacy does not mean making medical decisions, giving medical advice, or directing clinical care. Doulas encourage clients to discuss all medical decisions with their licensed providers.
Advocacy and Black maternal health
For Black families, informed, supported communication can be especially meaningful. Black Pearl's training connects advocacy to cultural competency and anti-bias education, preparing doulas to support respectful, informed care.
