How does a doula support a birth without providing medical care?
A doula supports birth through emotional and physical comfort, helping you prepare questions, supporting informed communication with your care team, and helping you understand your options. All medical care stays with your licensed providers. The doula's role is presence, comfort, and communication, not clinical care.
Emotional and physical comfort
During labor, a doula offers continuous emotional presence and physical comfort measures: positioning, massage, breathing guidance, and encouragement. These are comfort techniques, not medical treatments.
Communication support
A doula helps you think through what you want, put your questions into words, and communicate clearly with nurses, midwives, and physicians. The doula supports your voice in the room.
Understanding your options
When your care team presents options, a doula can help you understand what was said and think through your questions. Medical decisions remain yours, made with your licensed providers.
What the doula never does
A doula does not perform exams, monitor the baby, make medical decisions, or provide treatment. If you have clinical questions, your physician, midwife, or nurse is the person to ask.
