FAQ · For Families
How do doulas work with hospitals and care providers?
Doulas work alongside hospital staff and care providers as part of your support team. They coordinate communication and comfort, respect each provider's clinical role, and follow hospital policies. Most hospitals are familiar with doulas and welcome the added support.
A team that includes your doula
Your doula joins nurses, midwives, and physicians as part of your care experience. The doula focuses on comfort and communication while clinicians focus on medical care.
Respecting hospital policies
Hospitals have policies about doulas: where they can be, what they can do, and when they may be present, such as during a C-section. Your doula follows those policies and helps you understand them.
Communication that helps everyone
A doula helps you express your preferences and questions clearly, which supports your care team too. When everyone understands your wishes, the experience tends to go more smoothly.
Introducing your doula
You can introduce your doula to your provider at a prenatal visit or at the hospital. Many care teams appreciate knowing who will be supporting you during labor.
