FAQ · Becoming a Doula
Can I become a doula without healthcare experience?
Yes, you can become a doula without healthcare experience. Doula training teaches the skills of emotional presence, comfort measures, advocacy, and education from the ground up. Certification as a doula is not a healthcare license, and it does not qualify you to provide clinical care.
What training teaches you
Doula training covers prenatal, birth, and postpartum support skills; comfort measures; communication; advocacy; cultural competency; and professional boundaries. None of these require a medical background to learn.
Skills that transfer from other work
Many doulas come from teaching, caregiving, community work, customer service, or other people-centered fields. Listening, staying calm, and communicating clearly are core doula skills that life experience can strengthen.
What certification does and does not mean
Certification demonstrates that you have completed structured doula training. It does not make you a licensed healthcare professional, and it does not allow you to diagnose, treat, prescribe, or deliver babies.
