FAQ · Becoming a Doula
How do you become a doula?
You become a doula by completing doula training and certification, gaining hands-on experience, and building the business skills to serve families sustainably. No healthcare license or medical background is required. Black Pearl Doula Collective trains aspiring doulas in birth and postpartum support skills, advocacy, cultural competency, and business operations.
Learn what doula work involves
Start by understanding the scope of the role: prenatal education, birth support, postpartum support, advocacy, and healthcare navigation. Talking with working doulas can help you see whether the work fits your strengths and goals.
Complete training and certification
Doula training combines structured coursework with hands-on practice. Black Pearl has offered immersive weekend trainings in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and a specialized course for healthcare professionals with flexible online learning. Contact Black Pearl for the current schedule, format, and requirements.
Build experience and community
After certification, doulas build experience by supporting families and learning from mentors. Mentorship and community are part of the Black Pearl ecosystem: certified doulas can connect through the Collective and mastermind gatherings.
Build your practice
A doula career is also a small business. Defining services, setting up scheduling and intake systems, and getting your name in front of families are all part of the work. Black Pearl's Business Building program covers exactly these fundamentals.
