What is trauma-informed doula support?
Trauma-informed doula support recognizes how past trauma can shape a person's experience of pregnancy and birth, and responds with safety, choice, and compassion. It is core to Black Pearl's training, and it shapes how doulas communicate, seek consent, and create a sense of control for the families they serve.
What trauma-informed care means
Trauma-informed care assumes that many people carry experiences that affect how they feel in healthcare settings. It responds with safety, trust, choice, and collaboration rather than assuming a one-size-fits-all approach.
How doulas apply it
A trauma-informed doula explains what is happening, asks before touching, offers choices, and follows the family's lead. Small things, like asking permission and checking in, can make a large difference in how supported a person feels.
Not a clinical treatment
Trauma-informed support is a way of relating, not a mental-health treatment. A doula does not diagnose or treat trauma. When a family needs mental-health support, the doula can encourage them to connect with a licensed professional.
Part of Black Pearl training
Trauma-informed approaches are built into Black Pearl's certification curriculum alongside cultural competency and advocacy, preparing doulas to serve families with safety and compassion.
