FAQ · For Families
What does a birth doula do?
A birth doula provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational support during labor and birth. From early labor through delivery, the doula helps you stay comfortable, informed, and confident, while your licensed care team manages the clinical side of your care.
Continuous presence through labor
Unlike shift-based hospital staff, a birth doula stays with you for the full labor. That continuity means someone who knows your preferences is always in the room.
Comfort measures
Birth doulas use a range of comfort techniques: positioning, movement, breathing, massage, counter-pressure, and encouragement. These are comfort measures, not medical treatments.
Communication and information
A birth doula helps you understand what is happening, put your questions into words, and communicate with your care team. The doula supports your decisions without making them.
Supporting your partner too
Birth doulas also support your birth partner, showing them how to help and giving them breaks. The whole team, partner and doula, works together to support you.
