FAQ · For Families
How does doula support work during labor?
During labor, a doula stays with you continuously, from early labor through birth and the first hours after. The doula offers comfort measures, emotional support, and help communicating with your care team, while your licensed providers manage the clinical care.
From early labor onward
Your doula often joins you in early labor at home, helping you rest, move, and decide when to head to the birth location. Once you are in active labor, the doula stays by your side.
Comfort and positioning
Doulas help you find comfortable positions, use breathing and movement, and try comfort measures that ease labor. They adapt to what is working for you in the moment.
Communication with the care team
Your doula helps you express your preferences and questions to nurses, midwives, and physicians. If plans change, the doula helps you understand your options and process new information.
After the birth
A birth doula typically stays through the immediate postpartum period, supporting initial feeding, skin-to-skin contact, and the first moments as a family before stepping back.
