FAQ · For Families
Does a doula provide breastfeeding support?
Doulas can support early breastfeeding with positioning, latch basics, and encouragement in the first hours and days after birth. Breastfeeding is a skill that takes practice, and doulas are not lactation professionals. For persistent challenges, they encourage connecting with a certified lactation consultant or your care provider.
Early feeding support
In the immediate postpartum period, a doula can help with the first feedings: positioning, comfort, and recognizing feeding cues. This early support can make the start smoother.
The doula is not a lactation consultant
Doulas are trained in support, not clinical lactation care. A lactation consultant or your care provider is the right person for tongue-tie concerns, significant pain, or low milk supply.
Feeding is more than breastfeeding
Doulas support all feeding paths: breastfeeding, pumping, and formula feeding. Whatever your approach, the doula helps you feel confident and supported.
Referrals when needed
If challenges arise, a doula can encourage and help you connect with a lactation professional. That referral is part of the doula's role in supporting your family's care team.
