How do doulas structure consultations?
A consultation is where families decide if you are the right doula for them, and where you decide if the fit is right for your practice. Black Pearl's Business Building program teaches doulas to structure consultations that serve both the family and the practice, with clear agreements and professional boundaries.
The purpose of a consultation
A consultation lets the family meet you, hear how you work, and ask questions. It also lets you understand the family's needs, preferences, and timing so you can confirm you can serve them well.
What to cover
Useful consultations cover your services, how support works before, during, and after birth, your availability, fees, and how the family would reach you. Leave time for the family's questions.
Clear agreements
After a consultation, a clear agreement should spell out services, fees, payment terms, on-call expectations, backup arrangements, and boundaries. Clarity protects the family and the doula.
Professional boundaries
Consultations are also where boundaries are set: the non-clinical scope of doula work, communication expectations, and what the doula can and cannot do. Black Pearl teaches these boundaries as part of Business Building.
