How Doula Consultations Work: What Families and Doulas Should Know

A doula consultation is a meeting where a family and a doula decide whether they are a good fit. For families, it is a chance to ask about training, experience, availability, services, and fees. For doulas, it is where a practice begins: a clear, structured conversation that serves the family and builds a sustainable business. Black Pearl's Business Building program teaches doulas exactly how to run these conversations well.

What happens at a doula consultation?

A consultation usually lasts 30 to 60 minutes and covers the basics of the doula's work and the family's needs:

  • The doula's training, experience, and philosophy of support
  • The services included: prenatal visits, birth support, postpartum visits
  • Availability around the due date and backup arrangements
  • Fees, payment options, and what the contract covers
  • The family's hopes, preferences, and questions

Questions families should ask

Families get the most from a consultation when they come prepared. Good questions include:

  • What training and certification do you have?
  • How do you support birth preferences and changing plans?
  • How do you work with hospitals and care providers?
  • What happens if you are unavailable when I go into labor?
  • What is included in your fee, and what are the payment terms?

How doulas prepare for a consultation

A strong consultation is prepared, not improvised. Doulas who treat consultations as a system show up with clear information about their services, a list of questions that helps them understand the family, and a simple way to follow up afterward. The goal is to help the family make a confident decision, whether that decision is yes or no.

Why professional boundaries matter

Boundaries protect both the family and the doula. A doula's role is non-clinical: emotional, physical, and educational support, never medical advice. Clear boundaries around scope, communication, and scheduling help families know what to expect and help doulas run a sustainable practice. Black Pearl's training covers professional boundaries and ethics as core material.

What happens after the consultation?

If both sides feel it is a fit, the next step is usually a written agreement covering services, fees, and expectations, then scheduling prenatal visits. If it is not a fit, a good doula will say so kindly and may offer referrals. Either way, the family leaves with clarity.
